A Reflection on the PRSSA National Conference

The NEW Chapter of PRSA supports the efforts of local PRSSA chapters. This year, a $250 scholarship was presented to Amanda Betts, a senior at UW-Oshkosh, to attend the PRSSA National Conference.

This past academic year was filled to the brim with networking events. I loaded my schedule with social gatherings in preparation for my 2009 college graduation. With a journalism degree with an emphasis in public relations, I worked closely with my PRSSA chapter at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. As the semester progressed, a few of us were planning on attending the 2009 PRSSA National Conference: “Surfing the Waves of Change.” With the gracious help of the Northeast Wisconsin PRSA chapter, my dreams of attending the conference were made true.

On my way to the conference, which was held in San Diego, Calif., I could not help but take the time to think of my future. The reality of acknowledging my transition from student to professional was fast approaching. But I still did not have a complete thought out plan as to what my career goal was.

I attended various professional development sessions during the conference such as crisis management, media relations and international work. Each one of these sessions was highly beneficial and ran by some of the top PR professionals from around the world. The session that intrigued me the most was that on international PR, “Go Global, Get an Edge” by Jim Holtje of Siemens Co. Holtje touched on how the world is becoming far more interdependent and, therefore, corporations will need more communication professionals to help build international relations. With a minor in Spanish and a passion for travel, this session opened my eyes to a world of work that I will strive to obtain.

I may be new to the professional world, but I can proudly say I have a strong goal within the career now. Holtje told us to broaden our horizons and network as much as you can. So all in all, the conference helped me surf those waves of change. My change was my career outlook and, now, I am excited to begin pursuing the next big challenge that lies on my horizon.
